Hillary Clinton on Iraq
Hillary Clinton has a three-step plan to bring the troops home, bring stability to the region, and replace military force with a new diplomatic initiative to secure Iraq's future.
The most important part of Clinton’s plan is to immediately start bringing American troops home and end the military engagement in Iraq. Within the first 60 days of her Administration she would convene the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council directing them to draw up a comprehensible, realistic plan to bring the troops home.
As president, Hillary Clinton would focus American aid efforts on stabilizing Iraq, not propping up the Iraqi government. She would direct aid to the entities most likely to get it into the hands of the Iraqi people. Clinton also favors the appointment of a high level U.N. to help negotiate peace among the various parties in Iraq.
Within days of taking office, Hillary Clinton would assemble a stabilization group consisting of key allies, other global powers, and all of the countries bordering Iraq. The task of this group would be to develop and implement a strategy to create a stable Iraq.
