Hillary Clinton on Federal Deficit

Hillary Clinton stressed her support for Social Security and Medicare in her address to the 2000 Democratic National Convention. Clinton believes it is time to protect the next generation by using the budget surplus to pay down the national debt, save Social Security, update Medicare by providing prescription drug benefits, and provide targeted tax cuts to the neediest families.

Clinton has sponsored legislation designed to reduce the deficit by reinstating some taxes that had been cut. She has co-sponsored legislation related to debt and deficit reduction.
In January 2008 Clinton announced a $110 billion economic package designed to deal with the effects of a looming recession. The package would help deal with the effect of the mortgage crisis, help lower-income families pay for increased home energy costs, extend unemployment insurance, and provide some tax refunds.
